Still, you won't go hungry on Celebrity Solstice and the main dining room, the glass-filled Grand Epernay, is an impressive home base.

The Oceanview Café is likewise airy, although it can be difficult at peak hours to find a seat. The AquaSpa Café and Mast Grill round out the ship's complimentary options, although these venues do close at dinner. The comfortable seating and sweeping views drew me to this massive, gorgeous venue on deck 14 for hours each day where I would curl up with a book or listen to music. The cabins also all have an interactive flat-screen TV, where you can also book reservations, services and excursions; examine your account; check menus; and watch on-demand entertainment. The channel line-up includes everything from cartoons to classic TV to movies; cable travel, sports and news channels; ship information channels; and music channels. However, as all cruise lines try to appeal to a broader range of passengers, gone are the days when specific dress or formal attire is required.

The 2900-passenger ship Celebrity Solstice was the first to be a part of Celebrity's Solstice class. Solstice has many of the personal amenities that cruisers have come to expect from the line, while able to transport almost 3000 passengers. One thing we missed were outlets and USB ports near the bed, now a necessity on newer cruise ships. Purists who love real walk-out balconies will be happy with the choices on Solstice; the ship does not have the infinite balcony cabins that dominate the Edge-class vessels. The "main" atrium opens fully to Decks 3, 4 and 5, around an area called the Grand Foyer. Activities such as archery (yes, archery) and dance parties such as the Silent Disco take place here at all hours of the day into the night. It’s fun to watch the crowd as they all move individually and silently to the music playing in their head. Karen and I didn’t have a chance to try it on the Solstice but did dance the evening away on our cruise previously on the Celebrity Eclipse. The Solstice offered Silent Disco a couple of times during our cruise. One of the best parts of the activities is that you can be a people-watcher and look from the sidelines. Show times were at 7 and 9 pm, and since we dined at 6 pm, we chose the 9 pm show.
